NEWARK – Don’t be surprised to hear the sounds of drumming coming from Downtown Nutrition on Wednesdays and Fridays.
It’s just one way the health food store, located at 32 N. Third St. in Newark, is hoping to get people moving.
In December, owner Sarah Qualls, began offering cardio drumming classes twice a week to anyone in the community looking for a fun workout.
Next week, she’ll start offering a plate training class, which uses paper plates to exercise.
So far, it seems as if customers are enjoying the opportunity to take classes that are outside the box, Qualls said.
“You want to show people that anyone can do it and you can have fun,” she said. “We want it to be fun.”
To set up for the cardio drumming class, Qualls puts yoga balls on top of buckets and plays upbeat music. Participants use drumsticks to hit the balls and use the balls to do jumps, sit ups, push ups, squats and exercises in time to the music.
“You don’t realize until later how much work you are doing,” she said. “When we are going at it, we can burn 500 to 700 calories.”
The work outs are low-impact and people of all fitness levels can participate, Qualls said.”Our goal is to reach out to the community to get everyone active and healthy,” she said. “Even my 4-year-old will try to do it, too. It’s just fun.”
